Target is spending $250M to upgrade 28 of its Twin Cities stores

What's happening?

Target has made a big announcement on Monday about its Twin Cities stores.

Half of its metro locations – 28 stores in total – will undergo a remodel this year that is costing the Bullseye $250 million.

It's part of a wider plan to remodel 325 stores around the country this year in 1,000 in total by 2020.

“Target’s top priority is delivering a shopping experience our guests will love, and we’re excited to make so many of our hometown stores even easier to shop" Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Target Properties, said in a press release.

"At the same time, we’re adding new features that put the spotlight on the great assortment our guests can find at Target."

What to expect

If you've been to the remodeled Target store on Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis, you'll have a taste of what to expect at your local store in the near future.

That's been revamped so that shoppers entering the grocery section are immediately confronted by a bevy of "grab 'n' go" food and drink options and an easy-access order pick-up counter.

The home and apparel entrance meanwhile is centered around "inspiration," with Target creating "elevated product and brand displays that invite guests to browse and discover."

But it won't be an exact replica of the Nicollet Mall store. Target says its teams are working on tailoring each remodel to the needs of local shoppers, so there will be variation between each store.

Since they're bigger, the Star Tribune reports that each SuperTarget remodel is expected to cost $10 million, with regular-sized Targets costing $5 million to revamp.
