Target to start same-day in-store pickup in time for Black Friday

Minneapolis-based retailer Target Corp. is going to implement same-day in-store pickup from purchases made online as the holiday shopping season approaches, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal reports.

Company officials discussed the move during its recent quarterly report.

According to the Star Tribune, Target says it hopes to start in-store pickup -- which is similar to a service Walmart and Richfield-based Best Buy already offer -- at all of its 1,800 U.S. stores in time for Black Friday shopping in late November.

The service will be called BOPS -- or Buy Online, Pick Up in Store.

Analysts question the effectiveness of the same-day in-store pickup model, saying in some cases that it might hurt a retailer.

Danny Silverman, vice president at the consulting firm Etailing Solutions, tells the Star Tribune that the service could potentially interfere with Target's "impulse sales."

Silverman, who advises companies on e-commerce, says if a customer visits a store just to pick up an order, they may bypass the impulse to buy something else while waiting at the checkout.

Target will also try out same-day delivery from stores, the Business Journal reports.

The initial test, says Target executive vice president for merchandising Kathy Tesija, will initially be tested with Target employees to start.

Depending on the outcome of the test run, the same-day delivery service may be implemented in 2014, Tesija says.

The Business Journal says Target has already tested the idea of same-day delivery by helping eBay deliver merchandise in California earlier in the year.
