Target has planted a stake in the future in San Francisco. The Star Tribune has a front-page story about the retailer's new Technology Innovation Center, located in the heart of the city by the Bay.

The newspaper reports that since opening in the past year, Target has put together a team of talent in the new so-called innovation colony. The San Francisco outpost has hired a team of research and IT professionals who will work to guide the Minneapolis-retailer into the digital age, keying on mobile, website and social media. The tech geniuses at the West Coast outpost are charged with staying ahead of the emerging online, smart-phone, technology-driven shopping trends.

Target has operated in Silicon Valley for years but only recently established a permanent presence in San Francisco.

“They are trying to get closer to the talent,” said Carol Spieckerman, president of the newmarketbuilders retail consulting firm. “Not everything can come out of headquarters.”
