Target Canada Chief Executive Tony Fisher, who spoke at a Toronto retail conference Tuesday, wants to create a “truly Canadian” online site, Wall Street Journal's Canada Real Time blog reports.

“We are taking the time to understand the digital landscape in Canada and what will resonate well with our guests,” Fisher told the newspaper.

The Minneapolis-based discount giant is in the midst of plans to open 124 stores across Canada this year -- the company's first venture outside of the United States.

Target is spending millions of dollars to convert former Zellers locations.

Last month, Target Corp. reported its first 24 Canadian stores that opened in March generated sales of $86 million.

Target has since rolled out 48 stores and two distribution centers.
