The Minneapolis teenager charged with the brutal beating death of a 2-year-old will stand trial for second-degree murder as an adult.

The Hennepin County Attorney's office announced Tuesday that Cody Feran-Baum waived his right to a hearing on whether his case should be heard in juvenile court.

Feran-Baum, 18, was 17 at the time of the alleged crime. He is accused of killing Sophia O'Neill, the 2-year-old daughter of his girlfriend.

He was watching the girl at his grandparents' house in Minneapolis in June, and he told police he beat the child because she would not stop crying, according to the county attorney.

The toddlers injuries were horrific, according to a probable cause statement, which said she suffered "multiple blunt-force injuries to her torso" after her back was repeatedly stomped on.

An adult criminal complaint will now be filed by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office against Feran-Baum, who will make his first appearance in adult court shortly after.
