A teenager has been arrested in connection with vandalism that left more than $50,000 worth of damage at the new $30 million Duluth Transit Center, which is expected to open next month.

The 18-year-old Duluth man is accused of taking a mallet from the construction site and going on a four-hour spree where he broke a water main, smashed bathroom fixtures and destroyed computers and security equipment, among other things, WDIO reports.

"It's malicious damage," Transit Authority general manager Dennis Jensen told the Duluth News Tribune. "But it could have been a lot worse. Had he known what he was doing, it could have been a lot worse."

The man is also suspected of taking items from vehicles parked on the site, reports note.

He was arrested Saturday night after he was caught on surveillance video. Formal charges are expected this week, WDIO says.

Saturday night's vandalism isn't expected to affect the Feb. 4 grand opening of the Duluth Transit Center, but it could delay some organizations from moving into the building as scheduled, reports note.
