Hennepin County Medical Center, HCMC

A teenage boy was shot dead in south Minneapolis shortly after an "encounter" with another person at a local business Thursday.

The shooting happened in the area of 35th and Chicago Avenue South, with authorities arriving at the scene just after 6 p.m. to find a 17-year-old with grave gunshot injuries.

He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died shortly after arrival.

Minneapolis Police Department says its investigation has found that the teen and another person were inside a business near the intersection "when they encountered each other."

"They went outside and the suspect shot at the victim," police spokesman John Elder said. "The victim was struck and fell to the ground. The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of officers."
