A Duluth teenager accused of killing a 27-year-old Army veteran was charged Thursday and could be tried as an adult.

The Duluth News Tribune reports a 17-year-old boy faces second-degree murder after Bryan Alan Starnes was found dead in his Lincoln Park home on Saturday.

According to court documents, Starnes' body was found by his roommates with more than 50 wounds to his head, face, neck and back. Investigators determined the injuries were caused by a hammer and a knife-like incident.

WDIO reports Starnes and the suspect were friends and played video games together at Starnes' home last Friday night along with another friend. The three also smoked from a hookah pipe.

Investigators say a PlayStation 3 was missing from the victim's room, the charges state, and the suspect's stepfather said the teen had sold him a PlayStation 3 and a hookah pipe.

When police brought the teen in for questioning, they discovered blood evidence on his shoes.

The boy's record includes a violent attack in the past. He's being held at the Arrowhead Juvenile Center.

St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin filed a motion to certify the teen as an adult.

Starnes served one tour of duty in Afghanistan.
