A 17-year-old passenger has died after riding in a stolen car that crashed into a tree, St. Paul police said Monday.

Deonia Lewis, of St. Paul, died Thursday at Regions Hospital, three days after the April 27 crash.

Lewis was riding in a car that had been reported stolen March 23. When police saw and began following it — without sirens or lights — on Dale Street near Como Avenue, the driver sped away.

As it crossed Western Avenue, it struck another vehicle, leaving it with minor damage, police documents say.

The driver appeared to lose control after the crash, hitting a tree on Burgess Street.

Four other passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation is still underway, a police spokesperson said Monday.
