A teenager who was fatally shot near the George Floyd memorial in Minneapolis last week has been identified as a 17-year-old boy.
Mario Sanchez Mendieta, of Minneapolis, died of multiple gunshot wounds at 6:40 p.m. on July 23. He was shot near Chicago Avenue and E 35th Street in Minneapolis, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner said. His manner of death is a homicide.
No one has been arrested in connection to his death.
According to a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for funeral costs, his family held a memorial service this week and plans to bring Sanchez's body back to Mexico so they can celebrate his life, noting he was at the wrong place at the wrong time when he was killed.
Sanchez's death is one of 38 homicides in Minneapolis this year, compared to 20 at this time last year, the Star Tribune says.
This week, Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo noted the uptick in crime in south Minneapolis as of late, including robberies and carjackings.
