Teens charged in connection with attempted robbery that left suspect dead

Four teenagers are charged following an attempted armed robbery in which a 16-year-old suspect was fatally shot by one of the victims in St. Paul.

The teenagers were with the suspect at the time police say he was shot, while trying to rob an adult male near Summit Avenue and Mississippi River Boulevard last Friday night.

The other suspects, who are all 16 or 17 years old, were charged as juveniles Wednesday with aggravated robbery and auto theft. Two of the teenagers have also been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.

Prosecutors also filed motions to charge all the teens as adults. (It is BringMeTheNews' policy to omit the names of people charged as juveniles.)

The Ramsey County juvenile petitions detail more of what authorities say happened on the day of the shooting, which began at 4:40 a.m. Friday when a car – which had two guns inside – was stolen on East Sixth Street in St. Paul.

About 10 minutes later, police say some of the suspects were present when a man was robbed at gunpoint, with one teen suspect telling him to "empty your pockets" and "give me everything you have." The victim handed over $20, a Wells Fargo ATM card, a bus card and a brown leather wallet, the petition says.

That night, around 10:26 p.m., police responded to Monument Park near the Mississippi River, where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead, and later identified by his family as 16-year-old Lavauntai Broadbent.

The man who shot Broadbent told police the suspect had pointed a gun at him and tried to rob him, so he shot him because he was afraid he was going to be killed, according to the petition.

The man has a valid permit to carry a gun.

A spokesperson for the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office told the Pioneer Press earlier this week they had not received a case from police to determine whether the shooter should be charged.
