The 8th graders who made a Mayo Clinic app were at the White House this week

Two eighth-grade girls from Kasson visited the White House this week as participants in President Barack Obama's White House Science Fair.

The event celebrates the winners of student competitions in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) from across the country, according to a news release.

On Tuesday, 14-year-old Andrea Richard, 13-year-old Lydia Mindermann and other students who had projects related to cancer research met with Vice President Joe Biden and received vice presidential bracelets, reported the Post-Bulletin. The girls also took a selfie with Biden, and Andrea received a peck on the cheek.

On Wednesday the girls shook hands with Obama, and by Thursday they were back in class at Kasson-Mantorville Middle School, according to the Post-Bulletin.

What is the app?

The girls developed an app called Mayo Free Time for patients visiting the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

It shows "activities happening at the Mayo Clinic that patients can participate in, a map of the Mayo campus along with the city of Rochester, and a chat and help screen."

“We created Mayo Freetime to solve the problem of patients coming to the Mayo Clinic who don’t know their way around Rochester MN or the Mayo Clinic,” they said on their blog. “Our app also helps patients who get lonely, bored, or who don’t know much about their problem. Our app connects patients to other people who they might want to talk to or do something with. Plus by chatting, they can find out more about their problem.”

The girls' app was the winner of last year's Technovation Challenge – an international competition that challenges girls to design a mobile app to solve a community problem.
