A Minnesota hunter and his dog were rescued earlier this week with the help of a drone. Yay, technology!

Here's a run-down of the story, according to Facebook posts from the DNR and Anoka County Sheriff's Office:

On Wednesday, a 65-year-old man was out hunting with his dog in Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area when he got lost in a swamp.

Stuck in waist-deep water, he called 911 for help, but the tall cattails surrounding him made it hard for rescuers to find him.

That's where the drone came in.

The drone belonged to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office Unmanned Aerial System.

The DNR said the drone helped conservation officers locate the hunter and pull him out of the swamp.

In their Facebook post, the sheriff's office said that this was "a real life call for service that the UAS program was specifically created for."

They also posted an aerial photo of the man and his dog in the swamp:

Rescuers secured him in a vest attached to a line and hauled him to safety with a helicopter. The hunter was described as "exhausted."

The DNR said the rescue was successful thanks to two conservation officers as well as the Anoka County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Saint Paul Fire Department and Forest Lake Fire & Rescue.

They said this story had a happy ending largely due to the fact that the man had a cell phone to call for help, but they stressed that hunters should have a safety plan.

They recommend always letting someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
