The governor's race gets its first candidate from Greater MN

Rep. Tim Walz has been mulling it for months.

U.S. Rep. Tim Walz says he's joining the race for governor of Minnesota.

The Democrat, who has represented Minnesota's 1st Congressional District in southern Minnesota since 2006, announced his bid for governor Monday in an interview with the Rochester Post Bulletin.

He's also launched a Walz for governor website.

"I think now more than ever people are just wanting [government] to work. They are not looking for the partisanship. They are not looking for me to have all the answers, but they are certainly looking for me to bring people together to find those solutions that we all know are there," Walz told the Post Bulletin.

Walz is the first candidate from outside the Twin Cities to announce a bid for governor, and the Star Tribune says many Democrats had been hoping he'd run because of his ability to get votes in years Democrats have struggled to get re-elected.

Last year was one of them – Walz beat out Republican challenger Jim Hagedorn by less than 1 percent of the vote to win re-election in the 1st Congressional District.

So who else is running?

Walz has been mulling a run for governor for months, and he's the fourth Democrat to announce a run to replace Democrat Gov. Mark Dayton when he steps down at the end of his term.

The other Democratic candidates who've announced they're running are: St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, state Auditor Rebecca Otto and state Rep. Erin Murphy.

U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan also said he's considering it.

As for Republicans, it’s still pretty up in the air: State Sen. David Osmek,Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and several others have said they’re thinking about it. House Speaker Kurt Daudt is also a potential candidate.
