The last day of 2014 will be a cold one

Not surprising for Minnesota, it's going to be cold on the final day of 2014. Much of the region is under a Wind Chill Advisory until 10 a.m. Wednesday as wind chill values hover in the -20 to -30 degree range through mid-morning.

We'll see lots of sunshine during the afternoon. Temperatures will actually warm into the lower to middle teens. However, stiff northwest winds at 10 to 25 mph are going to keep wind chill below zero all day.

You may remember that New Year's Eve last year was very cold as well, and many places in Minnesota, especially in the northern part of the state, didn't get above zero.

If there's any consolation, it's that pretty much the entire country is dealing with unusually cold temperatures. Folks going to California for the Rose Bowl parade Thursday morning will need to bundle up, as the temperature will only be in the mid-30s.

No snow is expected in Minnesota Wednesday night. So, besides the cold temperatures traveling to those New Year's Eve gatherings should not be an issue.

Here's a forecast for Wednesday evening. Temps remain rather steady with bitterly cold wind chills. Bundle up!

7 p.m. - Partly cloudy, 9 degrees, wind chill of -7 degrees.

8 p.m. - Partly cloudy, 8 degrees, wind chill of -8 degrees.

9 p.m. - Partly cloudy, 8 degrees, wind chill of -8 degrees.

10 p.m. - Partly cloudy, 8 degrees, wind chill of -8 degrees.

11 p.m. - Partly cloudy, 8 degrees, wind chill of -7 degrees.

12 a.m. - Partly cloudy, 8 degrees, wind chill of -7 degrees.

1 a.m. - Partly cloudy, 8 degrees, wind chill of -7 degrees.

The brutally cold Arctic Air moves out just in time for the first few days of 2015. Afternoon highs return to the 20s New Year's Day through Saturday. Expect a few snow showers Thursday, mainly north of the Twin Cities in central Minnesota.

Enjoy it, because the coldest air yet of the season arrives early next week.
