The man shot by Mankato police was kicking, hitting the officer, authorities say

Chase Tuseth, a 33-year-old teacher, died after being shot by police during the encounter.

The teacher shot and killed by police in a Mankato hotel last week ignored officers, and had been kicking and hitting an officer even after being Tased, officials now say.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which is investigating the Saturday morning shooting at the Mankato Country Inn & Suites, released details about what happened in the lead-up to the incident for the first time Monday afternoon.

Chase Tuseth, a 33-year-old teacher, died after being shot by police during the encounter. According to the bureau's news release, investigators did not find any weapons at the scene, indicating Tuseth was not armed.

What officials say happened

The BCA says Tuseth was behind the counter at the hotel lobby, throwing items at around 4 a.m.

Mankato Department of Public Safety officer Gary Schnorenberg responded, the BCA says, and found Tuseth in a hallway near the pool.

When Tuseth repeatedly ignored Schnorenberg's orders, the officer used a Taser to bring him down, the BCA says. When he went to put handcuffs on Tuseth, Tuseth broke free and began hitting and kicking Schnorenberg.

During the struggle Schnorenberg fired his weapon, striking Tuseth, the BCA says.

They attempted resuscitation efforts on Tuseth, but he died.

The officer was not wearing a body camera – the Mankato Department of Public Safety does not use them.

The BCA says Schnorenberg has been with the force for 30 years, and is on standard administrative leave.

Once the BCA is done with its investigation, it will turn over the findings to the Blue Earth County Attorney's Office for review.
