A man who was shot in the face during a suspected road rage incident in Fridley on Wednesday has died from his injuries.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office has identified the deceased as 33-year-old Simon Matthew Schiffler, of Williston, North Dakota.

He was shot by a car driver who says Schiffler was attacking his vehicle with a knife after a crash on Hwy. 65 at Medtronic Parkway Wednesday evening.

What happened?

Police continue to piece together what happened in the incident, but have released more details after speaking with witnesses.

Schiffler is believed to have been in one of four vehicles involved in a crash, and shortly after it happened was noted to be "acting extremely erratically."

"Schiffler accosted multiple people at the scene by physically pinning one driver to a passerby’s vehicle and groping and attempting to kiss a female involved in the crash," the sheriff's office said. "Schiffler then presented a large knife and attempted to assault another driver involved in the crash."

This driver "sought refuge" inside his car, at which point Schiffler began stabbing at the windows of the vehicle in an attempt to break the glass.

It was at this point that a bystander "not involved in the crash stopped to intercede."

"Witnesses describe Schiffler turning his attention to that individual and aggressively and intentionally engaged the armed individual."

It's at this point the bystander fired his gun, striking Schiffler, who died from his injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center.

The shooter has not yet been named and no charges have been filed in the case at this stage.

Police are seeking additional witnesses, with anyone near the scene at the time asked to call 763-427-1212.
