Suicide rates are on the rise in Minnesota, and the National Guard is looking for new ways to bring awareness to suicide prevention.

They will be hosting a "Power of One" fun run during National Suicide Prevention Week.

It will take place at the Benjamin Franklin Readiness Center in Arden Hills on Sunday, Sept. 11. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the opening ceremony will kick off at 9 a.m.

The run "emphasizes the power that one individual has to save a life and prevent suicide," the National Guard said in a news release.

During the run, participants will learn about risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors.

The free event will help guardsmen meet their annual suicide prevention requirements while bringing together battle buddies, family members, and the local community.

Saturday is World Suicide Prevention Day

In honor of World Suicide Prevention Day, the National Guard posted a moving video titled "I'm Only Human."

Check it out below:

Suicide on the rise in Minnesota

The suicide rate for adults in Minnesota was the highest on record last year.

According to the MN Department of Health:

726 people died by suicide in 2015 – so the rate was 13.1 per 100,000 people.

Previously, the highest rate had been 13. That was set back in 1986.

And the rise is mostly among men.

"While suicide presents a challenge for the Minnesota National Guard and the State of Minnesota as a whole, action is being taken to confront the issue through resilience and suicide prevention and awareness training, outreach and partnerships with Minnesota support agencies to minimize the risk of suicide in at-risk populations," the National Guard said.

Anyone who is in crisis can get in touch with the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, 24/7, by calling 1-800-273-8255, or chatting online here.
