Hormel is in its 125th year, and celebrating the opening of the new Spam museum in downtown Austin.

The heavily-visited landmark in southeastern Minnesota moved from Hormel's corporate headquarters to its new location on Main Street, which opened its doors Friday.

At 14,000 square feet, the museum is roughly the same size as before, but Hormel hopes new attractions and a vibrant location lead to 125,000 visitors in the first year.

KIMT reports that an inside playground, called "Kids Can! Play," interactive components such as touch screens, and a new exhibit called the "World Market" (featuring spam recipes from other countries), are just a handful of the new attractions.

Old exhibits, like the Supporting our Troops veterans exhibit and Spam's role in WWII, will still be included.

Hormel is also going to celebrate its 125th anniversary with a large community celebration on July 29 featuring The Band Perry, the Austin Daily Herald reported.

The museum's hours of operation from April to October are:

  • Monday-Saturady: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Sunday: Noon-5 p.m.
  • First Thursday of every month: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • From November to March:
  • Tuesday-Sunday: Noon-5 p.m.

Spamtown, USA

George Hormel founded his slaughterhouse and meatpacking facility in Austin in 1891, according to a Spam profiled in the digital magazine Eater.

George A. Hormel & Co. became officially incorporated by 1901, processing various meats and growing the legacy of one of the largest meat distributors in the world.

Austin has embraced the Spam legacy with restaurants featuring spam in their dishes, a restaurant named Johnny's Spamarama and even a street called Spam Boulevard.
