Minnesota's Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) released jobs figures on Thursday, showing that job vacancies rose to 98,000 in the second quarter of 2015.

This represents a 15.7 percent increase from the same period last year – and it means there is now almost one unemployed person in Minnesota for every vacancy, with the health care and social assistance sector accounting for 18.5 percent of available jobs.

Other sectors needing workers include the food and accommodation industry, retail trade, educational services and manufacturing.

There are currently 1.2 jobless persons for every open position (compared to 1.6 per open position last year) which is the third-lowest such rate ever recorded in Minnesota.

It's also the high number of job vacancies since the second quarter of 2001 – when there were 115,072 openings.

"The latest figures indicate a tight labor market in Minnesota, with companies looking to replace retiring baby boomers and other workers," said DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben. "As the labor market tightens, we will focus on developing the pipeline of highly educated and skilled workers to align with the needs of Minnesota’s growing companies."
