Hundreds of people are attending the funeral service for Philando Castile at the Cathedral of St. Paul.

Gov. Mark Dayton, Lt. Gov. Tina Smith and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman are among the estimated 2,700 people at the Cathedral, which has space for 3,000.

Castile was fatally shot by a St. Anthony police officer during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights on July 6. His death, which Gov. Mark Dayton has suggested was racially motivated, spurred demonstrations outside the Governor’s Residence and protests that closed down Interstate 94 and Interstate 35W.

Castile is not Catholic, the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis says, but the request to hold the funeral at the Cathedral of St. Paul came from Castile’s mother Valerie Castile, who wants the service to be for “people to come together in a new way” to pray for peace and reconciliation.

Valerie Castile has asked that there be no protests are her son's funeral, according to the Star Tribune. The family has also asked no video or still cameras be used inside the church, the archdiocese says.

On its way to the Cathedral, the procession will pass by the J.J. Hill Montessori Magnet School on Selby Avenue, where Castile worked, the Star Tribune reported.

Details on the service, reception

A visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. The funeral service is expected to last no more than two hours, the archdiocese says.

There will be a private burial following the funeral, the archdiocese notes.

A public reception will be held for Castile at the J.J. Hill school from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Star Tribune says. An anonymous donor has provided hot dogs and hamburgers for 1,500 to 2,000 people, the paper adds.

Castile will also be honored at Rondo Days on Saturday – what would have been his 33rd birthday. His family plans to serve cupcakes, the paper notes.
