The Uptown Theatre had seen more glorious days in its eight decades (it originally opened in 1913 and reopened in 1939 after a fire). But the once-swanky theater had become, as WCCO, put it, a dump.

But after six months of renovations and $2 million in improvements, the Uptown will reopen with some of its old-school charm (original chandeliers and the buildings signature murals) and a number of modern upgrades (bigger screens, digital projector, 350 plush seats with more legroom replace 900 tattered seats.)

Also new: reserved seating through the Internet, MPR reports. MPR also has images of the gleaming new space.

For its reopening weekend, the theater is featuring the independent comedy “Sleepwalk with Me.” The filmmakers are expected at evening shows Saturday, Minnesota Monthly says.
