Four Minnesota breweries took home medals at the 2016 World Beer Cup over the weekend.

The World Beer Cup, which is put on by the Brewers Association, is held every two years and is described as the "most prestigious beer competition in the world."

This year's competition included 6,595 beers from 1,907 breweries, a news release says.

Judges awarded a gold, silver and bronze for each of the 96 categories. A total of 253 breweries won awards – here's a look at the winners from Minnesota:

Firebrick, by August Schell Brewing Company of New Ulm, won the silver medal in the Vienna-Style Lager category. There were 57 entries.

Bemidji Brewing Company's German Blonde took home the bronze medal in the Golden or Blonde Ale category. There were 82 entries.

Minneapolis-based Insight Brewing Company's Sunken City brew won the bronze medal in the Belgian-Style Fruit Beer category. There were 58 entries.

Bauhaus Brew Labs, also based in Minneapolis, took home the bronze medal in the International-Style Lager for its Wonderstuff beer. There were 103 entries.

The World Beer Cup came at the conclusion of the Craft Brewers Conference, which was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this year.

“Brewing has no boundaries or borders,” Charlie Papazian, founder of the Brewers Association, said in the news release. “The World Beer Cup recognizes the very best in the global community of brewers — their innovation, creativity and the craft of beer and brewing.”

For this year's competition, there were 38.5 percent more entries than the last World Beer Cup, which has held in 2014.

The increase in entries reflects the overall growth of craft beer in both Minnesota and the United States.
