Thieves steal two red kettles from Salvation Army fund-raisers

It's the season of goodwill, but someone failed to tell thieves who have stolen two Salvation Army red kettles in Hayward, Wisconsin.

Two of the distinctive red collection containers have been stolen in the city in recent weeks, KARE 11 says, one of which contained up to $400.

According to WDIO-TV, the most recent incident happened outside Walgreen's on Wednesday, when surveillance footage saw someone pull up by the red kettle stand, and put the whole structure into the back of their vehicle.

Unfortunately for the thief, the kettle had been emptied just before theft.

But a few weeks ago, a thief who cut a cable to steal a kettle from outside Walmart will have got away with between $300 and $400, the Salvation Army's Sawyer County chapter.

"The money's used for people in need. You know if the people needed assistance, or needed help, they just had to come and ask. It's not like they had to steal from us," chapter director Debbie Huebner told Northland News Center.

Bell ringer Janice Lynn told the TV station that it was the first time in 25 years a kettle had been taken from the Hayward Salvation Army.

"They're kind of blackhearted people that have to steal from the needy," she added.

At this stage it is not known if the incidents are connected, but anyone with information has been asked to call the Hayward Police Department.
