Thinking about a Nintendo Switch? What you should know about the console – and its games

We do a deep dive on the Nintendo Switch with a couple of Game Informer writers – full audio interview inside.

The Nintendo Switch is two weeks old, and while it has apparently sold great so far, there are still plenty of people wondering whether it's worth buying one right now.

We chatted with two of the main Nintendo writers for Minnesota-based Game Informer – Senior Editor Ben Reeves and Associate Editor Kyle Hilliard – to talk all about the Switch.

A few of our questions: What does it do well, and where is it lacking? Is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild great enough to buy a console for? What the heck is up with the underwhelming launch lineup? And will Nintendo get more indie game developers on board?

You can stream our conversation below – or download the .mp3 file directly here.

Make sure to read Ben's rundown of the Nintendo Switch here, and check out Kyle's review of Breath of the Wild here.

What's up with the game lineup?

One of the things we talked about is the um, underwhelming, launch lineup.

Outside of the critically adored Breath of the Wild, you're looking at games like 1-2-Switch (which Ben and Kyle were not enthusiastic about), Just Dance 2017 ("nothing exceptional" but fun, remarked Kyle), Snipperclips (a co-op puzzle game that Ben called probably the No. 2 game on Switch right now), and Super Bomberman R (which sounds like a worse version of all the Bomberman iterations that have come before).

"I think the only system seller right now is Zelda. And there's some stuff on there that if you get a Switch, there might be stuff on there that you'd missed previously on other systems that is worth checking out," Ben told us, with the revamped Shovel Knight in particular getting some praise. "But really, I wouldn't recommend buying a system just for those games. Zelda's the one that you want."

Added Kyle: "It doesn't really change our original sort of recommendation which is, if you really have zero interest in Zelda – I mean you should be interested in Zelda, even if you haven't liked previous Zelda games – there really is nothing else that would merit purchasing the system outside of Zelda right now."

So where are all the big-name games?

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe comes out in April – though it's an expanded version of the Wii U's Mario Kart 8, not a completely brand new title.

Splatoon 2, the sequel to the surprise hit online multiplayer shooter Splatoon for Wii U, is slated for release this year. A free beta will be available at the end of March, and you can download it now.

Then there's Super Mario Odyssey, which wowed fans at the reveal – but isn't coming out until this holiday season at the earliest.

Other big names like Super Smash Bros.Pokemon and Kirby? We'll just have to wait and see.
