This is who's interested in using medical marijuana in Minnesota

About 1,000 people, spread across nearly all of Minnesota, say they're likely to register for Minnesota's upcoming medical cannabis program – and many of them suffer from Multiple Sclerosis or severe muscle spasms.

The state's Department of Health released a wide-ranging survey, meant to gauge interest in the program. The department notes however the survey was voluntary and online, which means it's probably not representative of the state's total population of potential users.

About 1,300 people took the survey (either for themselves or a dependent, such as a child). Here are a few interesting findings:

Most suffer from MS/chronic spasms

The survey asked people about what qualifying condition they had. By far, the top response was Multiple Sclerosis/severe muscle spasms, with 51.5 percent of people checking that box.

Second was seizures, including those due to epilepsy, which made up 17.5 percent of respondents; 10.8 percent of people said glaucoma, and 10.1 percent said cancer with severe or chronic pain.

Brainerd is very interested

The results asked for a location – and a Brainerd zip code (56401) had the most responses, with 24. In Minneapolis, 56406 had 22, and 55112 in St. Paul had 19.

Someone took a survey in nearly all of the state's 87 counties (though many will likely be a long way away from a distribution center). Here's a look at the map of respondents.

Odds & ends

  • About 69 percent of the 1,300 or so who took the survey said they were likely to register for the program (which is about 940 people total).
  • About 7 percent said they would not register for the medical cannabis program, with about one-third of them saying cost is the main reason.
  • The median age for a survey subject is 44. The oldest person is 87, and the youngest just 1. More than 80 percent of the respondents are between 19 and 64 years old.
