This week in music: Lightfoot's 'Carefree Highway Tour' rolls through Mpls.

Folk music legend Gordon Lightfoot is celebrating a half-century of music on the road with the appropriately titled "50 Years on the Carefree Highway Tour," which stops at the State Theatre in Minneapolis Monday night.

The concert promises hits, deep album cuts and behind-the-scenes anecdotes about Lightfoot's decades-long career, which produced such classics as "Carefree Highway," "If You Could Read My Mind," "Sundown" and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

While the West Virginia Gazette said Lightfoot looked thin and fragile and his voice sounded "a little shaky" at times during a September 2012 show in Charleston, an informal review last month in the Yakima (Washington) Herald embraced the 74-year-old singer-songwriter's vocals.

The Herald said Lightfoot's "voice isn't what it used to be. But in a way it's better. It has this aged poignancy. It seems as though it might crack at any moment. But it doesn't. "

Fans of Lightfoot's musical account of the Edmund Fitzgerald may want to take note of a change he's made in the live performance of the song.

The Los Angeles Times reported that in a Q&A and musical performance at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles last month, Lightfoot said he altered the lyric of the sinking of the freighter -- which killed all 29 crew members -- after subsequent probes altered conclusions about what caused it to go down during a winter storm in Lake Superior in 1975.

Also coming in concert this week are classic rockers Kansas, playing Grand Casino Mille Lacs Friday night, and 1970s and '80s pop hitmakers Little River Band, which will take stage at Northern Lights Casino in Walker on Saturday.
