Thousands celebrate Pride at Minneapolis parade

Thousands of Minnesotans gathered in Minneapolis for the 42nd annual Twin Cities Pride Festival this weekend.

The event celebrates the LGBT community and gay rights, and is one of the largest of its kind in the nation, WCCO says.

"It's so cool," Austin Czichotzki, a Minneapolis resident, told KSTP. "I mean there's such diversity all around. You look around and there's so many different kinds of people, all coming together for a similar goal."

The two-day event is highlighted by Sunday's Pride parade, which was led by co-grand marshals former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and current Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau, who is the first female police chief and the city's first chief to be openly gay, the Pioneer Press says.

Gay Pride Festival celebrates 40th anniversary this weekend

Participants in the annual Twin Cities Pride Festival have an extra reason to celebrate this weekend when the event turns 40. The two-day festival, which runs Saturday and Sunday, is the third largest Gay Pride event in the nation. A spokesperson estimates 350,000 people from all over the state will attend.
