Thousands of gallons of raw sewage leaks onto frozen Minnesota lake

It poses no threat to the public, pollution experts say.

Residents of Maple Lake had to endure a less than pleasant sight – and smell – this week when thousands of gallons of raw sewage leaked onto a nearby lake.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MCPA) told GoMN that between 3,000 to 5,000 gallons of municipal wastewater leaked from a pipe near Maple Lake.

It drained to a stormwater pond that itself drains onto Ramsey Lake, it said, with sewage later found on top of the lake ice.

Ron Edmonson, who lives on Ramsey Lake, told KSTP his family saw a "brown slush" sitting on the ice on Tuesday, with his son later seeing water spraying from the side of the road.

He went to take a sample, sticking his hand into the water at which point he realized "how warm it was." He also told the TV station: "I could see floating toilet paper, and I thought 'I've got sewage.'"

The MPCA said it doesn't believe there is a threat to the public from the spill.

The pipe is monitored by the city of Annandale, in Wright County, which has been assisting the MPCA with the cleanup of the waste.

The leak is believed to have sprung when a coupler on the pipe failed.
