Three individuals were rescued Saturday in Wabasha County after their pontoon boat went over a dam.

According to a Facebook post from the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, the department responded to a report that a pontoon boat had gone over the hydroelectric Power Dam at Lake Zumbro at around 10:40 p.m. Saturday.

Four people had originally boarded the boat. Shortly after, the driver realized they were close to the dam and attempted to move away. When it was too late, the driver told passengers to move to one side of the boat.

One passenger jumped off and swam to a nearby buoy. The others rode over the dam but landed upright and safe. The passenger that jumped off alerted others in the area.

The three passengers who went over the dam were assisted by the Mazeppa Fire Department, local sheriff’s departments and nearby boaters. All were rescued safely, though one sustained non life-threatening injuries.

While still under investigation, authorities believe alcohol and lack of visibility at night may have contributed to the incident.
