Thumbs up for school improvements in 3 districts with bond referendums

Voters in three metro school districts approved referendums for improvements in special elections held Tuesday.

Here's a look at the referendums:

New Prague

Voters in the New Prague district passed a $58 million bond referendum request by a 67 percent majority.

The funds will build a swimming pool, renovate the middle school and upgrade the central education campus building.

The referendum will increase property taxes for the average taxpayer in New Prague by $8, KSTP reports.

In Shakopee, voters approved a $102 million bond referendum that will allow the district to upgrade security and technology and expand facilities to accommodate its growing enrollment.

"We need to fix the enrollment crisis we're having, starting at the elementary level up to the high school," school board member Angela Tucker told KSTP.

This will mean a property tax increase of about $24 a month, the news station adds.

Voters narrowly approved the $125 million Edina district bond referendum request, which sought $125 million to renovate all of its schools, improve security, and expand the high school.

The Edina district plans to add about 135,000 square feet to the high school, part of its plan to move ninth-graders from the middle school to create a more traditional high school and middle school experience.

The Star Tribune reports that the terms of the bond plan would increase taxes for the owner of a typical $400,000 Edina home by an estimated $299 a year.

Stillwater bond vote coming

The Woodbury Bulletin notes the Stillwater Area Public Schools will put its $97.5 million bond referendum before voters in that district on May 12.

The east metro district has launched a "Vote Yes to Reinvest" campaign to promote its passage.
