Thunderstorms, sleet, snow: Merry Christmas everyone!

The song goes "I'm dreaming of a thunderstorm for Christmas," right?

The song goes "I'm dreaming of a thunderstorm for Christmas," right?

After some snow Wednesday in northern Minnesota, and the possibility for an inch or so in the southern part of the state Friday, things start to get much more interesting.

The forecast is calling for quite the array of weather on Sunday, including the possibility of snow, sleet, rain, thunder and flooding. And depending on where you are in the state, conditions will be different.

Here's a breakdown of what to expect this weekend, but remember to keep an eye on the forecast because we're still a few days out and things can change. It is Minnesota, after all.

1-2 feet of snow for NW MN

The National Weather Service says the best chance for accumulating ice and snow Sunday is across northern Minnesota, with the heaviest snow expected across the southern Red River Valley into west-central Minnesota Sunday afternoon.

Meteorologist Paul Huttner wrote on MPR News' Updraft blog that the area could see 1 to 2 feet of snow if it stays cold enough. But the weather service notes there's still a lot of uncertainty with the forecast, adding: "any little shift in the track will make a difference between heavy snow and the possibility of sleet or freezing rain."

Northeastern Minnesota, including the Iron Range and Twin Ports, won't see quite as much snow, but could still pick up 6-plus inches. The Brainerd Lakes Area will see mostly a wintry mix.

All this changing weather Sunday could make travel difficult, so be sure to check road conditions before you go. You can do that through MnDOT's website here.

Flooding for southern MN?

The southern half of the state probably won't see any snow on Sunday.

The day will start with a wintry mix, but as temperatures warm up throughout the day it'll change to all rain, the National Weather Service says. By Sunday afternoon and evening, we could see a few thunderstorms pop up, which could bring even heavier rain.

The area will pick up about an inch of rain, which could cause some problems in the coming days.

With the additional rain, combined with the current snowpack and the already swollen rivers (which are now frozen or jammed with ice after last weekend's bitter-cold temperatures), it could increase the chance for flooding, the weather service says.

Parts of several counties – including Sherburne, Wright, Crow Wing and Morrison – are already under a flood warning "until further notice" because of the conditions on the rivers.
