What the hail? Fast-moving storm makes it look like winter

A line of thunderstorms that popped up this afternoon brought some brief heavy rain showers and unusually heavy hail to the Twin Cities metro area.

These storms have largely moved away from the metro into western Wisconsin, but a second, weaker wave is now moving through.

The hail came down in great waves across the western metro into Minneapolis, and some of the photos and videos that people shared are remarkable. Here's a sample.

This weekend's summer-like temperatures into the low 80s set the stage for the thunderstorms, which came through along a cold front that dropped temperatures by 10 degrees or more in a matter of minutes.

Drier, pleasant conditions are expected Monday ahead of another bout of stormy weather midweek, AccuWeather reports.

A high pressure system is expected to build in the region, increasing the chance for rain Tuesday, the website notes. Extended weather models suggest Minnesota could pick up nearly 1 inch or more of rain by the end of the week, meteorologist Paul Douglas wrote on the Star Tribune weather blog.

By Wednesday, temperatures are expected to climb back up near the 80s, AccuWeather says.
