'Tis the ski-son as snowmaking begins on the slopes

Winter can't some soon enough for those who love tow-ropes, lift chairs and the whooshing of cold air during a downhill run. Their wait is over as the chill in the air is creating the right conditions for snow-making at some Minnesota ski resorts.

WCCO reported that Buck Hill announced that it’s opening for the 2013-14 ski season on Wednesday afternoon, with four runs and three lifts open for skiing and snowboarding. The metro area hill is famous for being the spot where Olympian Lindsey Vonn began her training.

The Examiner reported that Wild Mountain in Taylors Falls began making snow in late October. The Pioneer Press had a series of photos as the first of the white stuff was applied over green slopes and eager skiers and snowboarders took their first run of the season. The White Bear Press noted that Wild Mountain has traditionally been the first resort in Minnesota to open for the ski season.

The website for Trollhaugen in Dresser, Wis. said the resort is opening on Wednesday after two full days of snow making. The Welch Village website said "there is a good chance" the hills there will open on Nov. 22. Lutsen's website says that the resort overlooking Lake Superior will open to skiers on the weekend of Nov. 23-24.

In Duluth, Spirit Mountain's website said the tentative opening day will be Nov. 28. The Duluth News Tribune reported Spirit Mountain has had reduced attendance for the past four years because of low snowfall and above-normal temperatures.

"It’s really important for us to have a real Minnesota winter," said Renee Mattson, executive director of Spirit Mountain.
