Update: tornado spotted in N.D., storms move into northwest MN

Storms are expected to follow the I-94 corridor to the Twin Cities.

Update: 9:30 p.m.

The severe storms are moving east deeper into Minnesota, the National Weather Service says. No tornado warnings are in effect, but there are two severe thunderstorm warnings.

Update: 8:40 p.m.

The newest tornado warning includes four northwestern Minnesota counties: Norman, Mahnomen, Clay, and Becker. It lasts through 9:15. The Weather Service says it featured hail the size of ping pong balls and flying debris will be dangerous.

The Weather Service says just after 8:30 a storm that could produce a tornado was over Ada.

Here's what GoMN's Joe Nelson saw from just south of Ada:

Meanwhile, MPR News says reports of damage that may have been caused by a tornado are coming in from Halstad in Norman County.

Update 7:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service confirms that a tornado touched down about 29 miles south of Grand Forks earlier this evening.

Update: 7:05 p.m.

There's a tornado warning until 7:45 p.m. in the area around Grand Forks, North Dakota. The warning includes Polk County, Minnesota. Forecasters say a storm that was about 12 miles north of Grand Forks at 7 p.m. was heading east with winds strong enough to damage mobile homes, roofs, and vehicles.

GoMN producer Joe Nelson is riding along with a storm chaser in the Red River Valley and posted this live update to Facebook:

Below is the story posted earlier this evening:

Severe storms moving into northwestern Minnesota have spawned a tornado watch for much of northwest Minnesota.

The National Weather Service's tornado watch covers 15 counties: Becker, Clay, Clearwater, Grant, Hubbard, Kittson, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Otter Tail, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, Wadena and Wilkin.

It's in effect until 11 p.m. A watch means dangerous weather could happen, so anyone in the area should pay attention to the forecast in case things turn into the more-dire warning.

Where the storm is headed next

The stormy weather is expected to basically follow Interstate 94 to the Twin Cities area tonight, with high winds, hail and possibly flooding.

But forecasters have pushed back the timing a little compared to what they were saying early Tuesday.

In addition to wind and hail, flash flooding could be an issue tonight. If the storm stalls over a particular area for awhile, 2-3 inches of rain could accumulate quickly, forecasters say.

Right now the area between Mankato and Albert Lea looks particularly at risk of "excessive rain" late tonight, the Weather Service says.
