Train derailment in Two Harbors sends 2 to hospital

Several train cars carrying iron ore pellets slipped off the tracks in Two Harbors Thursday afternoon, sending two people to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The Lake County News-Chronicle says the derailment occurred just after 1 p.m. between Northshore Manufacturing and Two Harbors Lumber on Fourth Avenue.

Uwe Kausch, an employee at Northshore Manufacturing, told the newspaper that the cars were "stacked up like cord wood."

WDIO says it appears more than a dozen Canadian National train cars en route to the Two Harbors ore docks are involved. A typical ore train has more than 100 cars, the News-Chronicle reports.

It's unclear if the derailment was weather related. A snowstorm this week hammered northeast Minnesota, leaving 42 inches just north of Two Harbors.

FOX 21 has video from the scene.
