Train hits 19-year-old Minn. woman wearing earphones
A 19-year-old woman, who was listening to music with earphones and apparently did not hear her friends yelling warnings at her, was hit and critically injured by a 96-car freight train in Isanti County, the Star Tribune reported. She also did not heed the BNSF train whistle.
Elena Bayerl, who lives near the city of Isanti, was walking just outside the rails and was hit shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday just south of Isanti, according to the sheriff’s office, the newspaper reported.
The two men had tried to get to the woman, but they did not make it in time, they said.
Bayerl was found lying on the west side of the tracks, still conscious, and she was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center, the Isanti County News reported. The train eventually came to a halt and the crew cooperated with authorities, the publication reported.
The woman was in critical but stable condition, WCCO reported.
