She claims that Schmitz and his friends taunted her with anti-gay and racist remarks and threw a glass at her. McDonald is receiving support from local elected officials and transgender advocates across the nation. The trial opens today.

Transgender woman agrees to plea bargain just before murder trial

Transgender activists around the country had been tracking the case of CeCe McDonald, saying she was defending herself from a hate crime when she stabbed a Richfield man to death with a pair of scissors. By pleading guilty to manslaughter, McDonald is expected to be sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.

Former Elk River high school English teacher Matthew Ellsworth of St. Paul, who admitted to a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student, has been sentenced to five years of probation. He told a judge they could not help falling in love. The girl, who has since turned 18, said, "I want everyone to know that this (prosecution) was not my choice. I was not victimized."

A 21-year-old man from Cokato was charged Monday in a crash that killed three generations of a family over the weekend, WCCO reports. Michelle Hoffman, 40, her 8-year-old daughter Julia and her mother-in-law, 68-year-old Marty Stoffers, died in the crash Friday night near Willmar. Investigators believe Paul Wickenhauser, who was driving the pickup truck that struck their vehicle, had been drinking.
