Travel guide names Mpls. neighborhood to its 'can't miss' list

It's an unlikely choice as one of the "must visit" places in the world, but a respected travel guide company acknowledged the meteoric rise of Minneapolis' North Loop by including it on its "Go List 2016."

Fodor's, a travel guide company that's existed since the mid-1930s, has been releasing its annual list of the top places in the world to visit for the past five years now.

This year, Minneapolis got in on the action.

The North Loop, which has undergone a huge transformation recently to become one of the trendiest places in Minnesota, was selected as one of Fodor's 25 "can't-miss spots" for its sudden combination of innovative art, stylish shopping and a revitalized dining scene.

Its inclusion on the list is unusual because all the other entrants are either cities (Adelaide, Philadelphia), regions or states (Normandy, Maine), or countries (Cuba, Ecuador). The North Loop is the only neighborhood featured.

Fodor's likens the area to similar regenerations seen in Berlin, Brooklyn and New Orleans, with the North Loop having "witnessed a slow but steady rebirth, as artists and businesses owners have moved into once-derelict warehouses and set up shop, restoring lofts and opening stylish boutiques."

It also highlights its proximity to cultural centers such as the Theater District and the Walker Art Center.

The top destination in this year's "Go List" was another that doesn't always get recognition as a vacation destination: Utah.

Fodor's said it "defies expectations" and says it's the place to get outdoors in 2016, either at its many ski resorts or at southern Utah's numerous red-rock canyons.
