The trial will begin early next year for the man accused of killing his former boyfriend outside a metro gas station in August.

KSTP reports Lyle "Ty" Hoffman's murder trial will begin Feb. 17. Hoffman, 44, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of prominent Minneapolis executive Kelly Phillips.

The Star Tribune reports the trial date was set after both sides were unable to reach a plea deal.

Phillips was shot multiple times moments after stepping out of a vehicle at a Holiday gas station on West Highway 96 in Arden Hills, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office said. The suspect shot Phillips, then fled the scene in a dark-colored BMW.

Phillips, a 48-year-old Mason City, Iowa, native, was a longtime executive at Boston Scientific and along with Hoffman co-founded the popular northeast Minneapolis club Lush Food Bar. The two were in a relationship together for several years.

The shooting prompted a weeks-long search for Hoffman, who police quickly designated as a suspect of interest before charging him while he was on the run. He was arrested exactly one month after the shooting, spotted while walking through an Arby's drive-through in Shakopee.

Hoffman entered a not guilty plea in October.
