Tribe plans to rebuild Mille Lacs resort

A venerable resort on Lake Mille Lacs is getting a new lease on life.

Eddy's Resort is getting torn down and rebuilt by its owners, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, the Business Journal reports. The tribe announced plans for new guest rooms and meeting space and said it wants to turn Eddy's into a world class destination resort and restaurant.

Last month the County Board of Commissioners approved a permit for a wastewater treatment plant that's part of the project. The Mille Lacs County Times reported the approval came despite some concerns that discharge from the plant might affect neighbors by raising the water table.

As Minnesota Public Radio reports, tribal leaders say the investment in Eddy's underscores the band's commitment to the lake and its place at the center of the regional economy.

That economy suffered in 2013 as the numbers of walleye in the lake – and tourists on shore – declined.

Scientists are studying what might account for the big drop in walleye, but one theory is that a prime food source is disappearing as the lake's temperature rises.

As for Eddy's, the band has not offered specifics about the size of its investment or a timeline for completion. For now the resort's website promises only "exciting changes coming soon."
