Members of the Eagan community have been united in grief over the tragic death of 13-year-old Patric Vitek.

The 7th grader suffered injuries that proved fatal after he was hit on Diffley Road as he biked to school Friday.

His death sparked mourning across the Eagan community, including his fellow classmates as well as teachers at Dakota Hills Middle School, which he attended.

Vitek also played for the Eagan Hockey Association, with his teammates and coaches among those sharing their condolences.

Eagan Civic Center was the scene of a memorial event that was attended by hundreds on Friday evening, and there was also a tribute paid at the Gopher Men's hockey game Saturday.

A GoFundMe campaign has been created by neighbors of his family, which as of 3 p.m. Sunday had raised nearly $48,000.

He is survived by his parents, Cheryl and Brian, as well as his younger brother Jack.

The road on which he died is a busy one, with Vitek's rear bicycle wheel struck by a vehicle heading eastbound on Friday morning.

It has a speed limit of 45 mph, with several schools nearby including Dakota Hills Middle and Eagan High School, as well as a Cub Foods and Dunn Bros.
