Driver barrels down bike path in Manhattan, killing 8 people

Reports say the driver was yelling 'Allahu Akbar' after the attack.

Eight people are dead after a truck drove down a bike path in lower Manhattan Tuesday afternoon, just blocks from the World Trade Center site.

The New York Police Department said on Twitter a suspect is in custody and officers aren't looking for anyone else.

They said a 29-year-old suspect rented a Home Depot truck, then entered the bike and pedestrian path with it a few blocks north of Chambers Street, heading south before striking another vehicle.

The driver got out holding two fake guns – one for paintball, the other a pellet gun. He was shot in the stomach by officers, NYPD said.

New York police said eight people were killed and another 11 had serious injuries, though they aren't thought to be life-threatening.

The New York Times says it's being investigated as a terror attack, with law enforcement officials telling the paper the suspect was heard saying "Allahu Akbar" after getting out of the truck.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is calling it a "cowardly act of terror."

Graphic video of the scene shows bodies and bikes lying in the path.

Another tweet shows a photo of what looks like two bodies on the ground.

The location of the incident is just off the Hudson River, a block east of Stuyvesant High School, and about four blocks north of the World Trade Center site.
