Trump supporter pleads guilty over incident with WCCO journalist in Duluth

The incident happened a few hours before Donald Trump held a rally in Duluth last September.

A Donald Trump supporter who was charged after an incident with a WCCO photojournalist before the former president's rally in Duluth last fall has pleaded guilty.

Duane Waldriff, 71, of Lamberton, pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly conduct on Friday, according to court records. A charge of fifth-degree assault was dismissed.

The judge stayed a 60-day sentence in jail and instead he'll have one year of unsupervised probation, records show. He was also ordered to pay a $400 fine, but that will be forgiven if he writes a letter of apology to WCCO's Dymanh Chhoun.

Waldriff was cited in October, accused of hitting Chhoun's phone out of his hand when he noticed Chhoun was trying to film an argument he was having with a Joe Biden supporter before Trump's Sept. 20, 2020, rally.

In the Chhoun's video, Waldriff said, “You guys want to be peaceful? Be peaceful! You want to be violent? Come to me!"

After hitting the phone, Waldriff left "without incident" and "several minutes" later it was reported to the police, police said at the time.

No one was injured and no property damage was reported.
