The nation's capital has bumped the Twin Cities from the top spot in an annual ranking of health and fitness.

After spending three years at No. 1, Minneapolis and St. Paul fell to No. 2 on the American Fitness Index from the American College of Sports Medicine, which was released Wednesday.

The annual report assigns a score to the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the U.S. The index looks at preventative health behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions and community resources that support physical activity, the website says.

Washington, D.C., ranked No. 1 with a score of 77.3 out of 100 possible points. Minneapolis was a few points behind, with a score of 73.5, followed by Portland, Oregon; Denver; and San Francisco, to round out the top 5.

The bottom five: Memphis, Tennessee, ranked the worst, followed by Louisville, Kentucky; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Indianapolis, Indiana; Nashville, Tennessee; and San Antonio, Texas.

The index highlighted the Twin Cities' notable strengths, which include lower death rates from disease, a higher percentage of physical activity among residents, and more amenities that support exercise. In these areas, Minneapolis and St. Paul ranked above the target goal.

There is room for improvement, the report said. The index noted there is a relatively higher percentage of people who smoke in the Twin Cities, and fewer people eat three or more vegetables per day, compared to the target goal.

The Twin Cities and Minnesota are frequently listed on national rankings as among the healthiest in a variety of categories. Last week, Minnesota was ranked the healthiest state for older adults.

Earlier this month, a health scorecard found that Minnesota leads the nation in a variety of health indicators, which include vaccinations, insurance coverage and obesity rates.

Last December, a report found Minnesota was among the healthiest, with a lower rate of obesity compared to other states.
