After cancelling in 2020 because of the pandemic, the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon plans to come back this fall with safety modifications in place.

Registration opens Thursday, April 8. The Oct. 3 race will be open to 4,000 runners and follow rules including:

  • Mask-wearing for all participants except while running
  • Social distancing
  • Limited spectator access, with overall discouragement of spectators

Other parts of the Twin Cities Marathon Weekend, including the 5K and 10K race, will also return this fall.

Twin Cities in Motion, which organizes the annual event, said in a press release it may adjust rules based on current safety needs in the future. The organization said it has consulted medical and crowd science experts, as well as the relevant public agencies, in planning the event.

“While there will be noticeable differences from pre-COVID days, we plan to do all we can to maintain the spirit and energy of the event despite the constraints," Twin Cities In Motion executive director Virginia Brophy Achman said in the statement.

“The power of the event lies in the thousands of personal achievements that culminate at our finish line, and we’re excited to return those moments to our participants’ lives after all they’ve endured.”

In 2019, runners raised more than $1 million for dozens of local nonprofits that sponsor the race.
