Twin Cities officers travel to attend funeral for fallen NYC policeman

Four police officers from Minneapolis and four from St. Paul will be among thousands of mourners expected to attend the funeral of fallen New York City police officer Rafael Ramos on Saturday.

According to KSTP, the officers are making the 1,200 mile drive to attend the funeral at the Christ Tabernacle Church in New York City.

Ramos and fellow officer Wenjian Liu were ambushed, shot and killed while sitting in their patrol car on Dec. 20.

The Wall Street Journal reports they were the first New York City police officers fatally shot in the line of duty since 2011.

Their accused killer, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, committed suicide, but cited the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown – the unarmed black men who died in confrontations with police in New York and Ferguson, Missouri, – as motive for the shootings.

One of the Minneapolis officers who will attend Ramos' funeral Saturday, Kenneth Tidgwell, is part of the Minneapolis Police Department's Honor Guard. Last summer he and officers from all over the country gathered for the funeral of Mendota Heights Police Officer Scott Patrick, who was gunned down during a routine traffic stop in July.

Others expected to attend Ramos' funeral on Saturday include Vice President Joe Biden, police commissioner William Bratton, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and U.S. Rep. Peter King, a Republican who represents Long Island.

According to the Washington Post, Jet Blue provided free flights into New York City for 670 law enforcement personnel traveling to attend Ramos' funeral, which is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Funeral arrangements for Liu had not been announced as of Friday.
