University of Minnesota student Anarae Schunk died after being stabbed 22 times with a kitchen knife, according to Dakota County charges filed against two suspects on Friday.

The Pioneer Press reported that Schunk's ex-boyfriend Shavelle Oscar Chavez-Nelson, 32, and Ashley Marie Conrade, 24, Chavez-Nelson's girlfriend at the time of Schunk's death, were charged Friday with second-degree intentional murder of the 20-year-old Brunsville native.

The charges said Schunk was killed in Conrade's Rosemount townhome and her unclothed body was dumped by the side of a rural road in Rice County in an attempt to cover up the crime. The charges said the body showed signs of someone having tried to light it on fire and that Schunk's blood was found on numerous items including a saw, a plastic bin, and clothing.

The Star Tribune reports that Conrade repeatedly denied being involved in Schunk's death, saying she had gone to bed early on the night of the incident. Charges say Conrade’s blood was found on the kitchen floor, along with blood from Schunk and Nelson.

Schunk vanished from Nina's Bar in Burnsville on Sept. 22. She had told family and friends that she planned to meet with Chavez-Nelson to try to recover thousands of dollars she had loaned him. KSTP reported that Schunk was with him and Conrade at the bar when Chavez-Nelson is accused of having fatally shot a man in the parking lot.

Chavez-Nelson denied killing Schunk or knowing where she was. Her body was recovered on Sept. 30.

Earlier, her mother told the Star Tribune that the family learned of many of the details of the case earlier in the month in a meeting with law enforcement officials.

“They talk about these different stages of grief,” Mariana Schunk said. “I’ve experienced it over and over and over. What in the world could Anarae have done so horrible to him that he would have done this?”

Conrade is in custody. Chavez-Nelson is currently in prison for an unrelated offense.
