Two people are dead and a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after a shooting Monday night.

The Alexandria Echo Press reports the incident began around 9 p.m. with a resident's report of a suspicious vehicle in a rural township near Alexandria. WCCO reports that when law enforcement officers arrived, they found two people inside the vehicle. One of the occupants fired at the deputy, hitting him in the chest. The officer returned fire, and the suspects fled in their car.

Authorities say the suspects' vehicle traveled a short distance and when it got stuck in the snow, they fled on foot. Officers pursued them on snowmobiles provided by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. After a search, the two suspects were found dead in the deep snow. Officers found a gun near the bodies.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says the deputy was wearing a bullet-resistant vest. He has been treated and released from the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.

The names of the officer and two suspects involved have not been released. The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. FOX 9 reports the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will release the cause of death.
