Two people were killed in a collision in Maple Grove Thursday afternoon with police saying alcohol appears to be a factor.

A man and a woman died after a head-on collision on County Road 81 at Maple Grove Parkway at 4 p.m., the Star Tribune reports, and they have now been named by police as Michael Kelley, 54, and Cheron Swanson, 68, both of Dayton.

Kelley is said to have been driving west and crossed over into the eastbound lane, side-swiping one car which in turn crashed into another car, causing non-life-threatening injuries to three people.

Kelley then continued eastbound, according to KARE 11, and was crashed head-on with another vehicle driven by Swanson. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police told the TV station that alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash.

In a statement reported by FOX 9, Maple Grove police said: "The Maple Grove Police Department would like to remind everyone of the importance of responsible alcohol consumption, especially during this holiday season, and to ensure you have a sober ride so we can prevent unfortunate incidents like this from occurring in the future."

The weather over the past 24 hours has brought treacherous driving conditions to the Twin Cities area, the Pioneer Press reports.

A weather system sweeping across the state brought snow on Friday evening that has continued overnight.

In less than three hours from 6 p.m., there were more than 90 crashes reported statewide, the newspaper notes, while many other vehicles had spun off the road.
